Is the new Spelljammer good? ›

Ultimately, the core concept of Spelljammer is just as delightful now as it was in the 80s, and while the rules (and the setting information, and the bestiary) might be a little sparse, they're still enjoyable to mess around with. For some groups that will be enough.

The rainbow ocean allows Spelljamming ships to attain greater velocities. These speeds have defied measurement since the phlogiston is without permanent landmarks or markers. In a general sense, it takes from 5-100 days to travel from one Crystal Sphere to another.

The supplement is organized into four chapters, with the 20 subclasses of Chapter 2 taking up half the book. Three new races are detailed in chapter one, the Astral Genasi, Metamorph, and Lumen. The races are the weakest additions, especially compared to the much more interesting races in the Astral Adventurer's Guide.

GamesRadar+ Verdict. Though incredibly colourful and vibrant, Spelljammer is a little thin on hearty mechanics, and at times can feel a little too rushed for its own good. Nonetheless, the inherent joy found in the concept, world, and monsters can't help but entertain all but the dourest of players.

If you're new to the setting, Spelljammer is best described as a cross between Disney's (very underrated) Treasure Planet, classic pirate adventures, and the swords n' sorcery action D&D is known for.
