The time: 1814. The place: Edo, now known as Tokyo. One of the highest populated cities in the world, teeming with peasants, samurai, townsmen, merchants, nobles, artists, courtesans, and perhaps even supernatural things. A much accomplished artist of his time and now in his mid-fifties, Tetsuzo can boast clients from all over Japan, and tirelessly works in the garbage-loaded chaos of his house-atelier. He spends his days creating astounding pieces of art, from a giant-size Bodhidharma portrayed on a 180 square meter-wide sheet of paper, to a pair of sparrows painted on a tiny rice grain. Short-tempered, utterly sarcastic, with no passion for sake or money, he would charge a fortune for any job he is not really interested in. Third of Tetsuzo's four daughters and born out of his second marriage, outspoken 23-year-old O-Ei has inherited her father's talent and stubbornness, and very often she would paint instead of him, though uncredited. Her art is so powerful that sometimes leads to trouble. "We're father and daughter; with two brushes and four chopsticks, I guess we can always manage, in a way or another." Decades later, Europe was going to discover the immense talent of Tetsuzo. He was to become best known by one of his many names: Katsushika Hokusai. He would mesmerize Renoir and van Gogh, Monet and Klimt. However, very few today are even aware of the woman who assisted him all his life, and greatly contributed to his art while remaining uncredited. This is the untold sto...

The facial expression of O-Ei a. k. a. “Miss Hokusai” radiates that certain “something”. Is it only the bushy eyebrows that lend her looks such strength of character? Despite her striking appearance, she is the relatively unknown daughter of the Japanese master painter Hokusai, who lived in Edo – the former name of Tokyo – in 1814 and was revered in Europe by such painters as Degas or Van Gogh. In the film he is portrayed as a loner and visionary who shares a chaotic atelier with his daughter, vying with her to attain excellence in the art of painting. One day when O-Ei’s younger sister is taken seriously ill, their routine begins to waver. Feeling powerless, he succumbs to fate without a word, while O-Ei frequently visits her sister in the home for the blind, sharing with her the sounds and noises of a busy bridge. Based on Hinako Sugiura’s manga “Sarusuberi”, the anime celebrated its international premiere at the 39th Festival von Annecy. Director Keiichi Hara and screenwriter Miho Maruo, who had already worked together for “Colorful”, won the Audience Award at the same festival in 2011. The team included, among others, Yoshimi Itazu (“The Wind Rises”) as the chief animator and Hiroshi Ono (“A letter to Momo”) as the digital matte artist. By Jonathan Clements. An illustration by Tsuyuki Kocho shows the famous artist Hokusai at work with his assistant, his daughter Oei (or Oi). The picture is dated 1843, only a few years before Hokusai’s death, when he was increasingly reliant on his divorcee daughter to care for him. Hokusai himself is partly obscured, crouching over a painting as if straining to see it properly. Oei is depicted in equally unflattering terms, her eyes narrowed in the disdain that allegedly cost her her marriage (she had a habit of laughing at her husband’s artwork), leaning on a long tobacco pipe. Her chin is somewhat prominent, reflecting a nickname that played upon this feature.
