TOP 10 RAREST DOG BREEDS IN THE WORLD

10. Norwegian Lundehund

These cute little pups are one of the most unique and rarest dog breeds in the world. They have unique features like six toes on each foot and elastic like necks. They’re also the only breed ever bred tohunt Puffins.

One interesting fact about these dogs is that their six toes provide better grip when climbing steep and rocky cliffs, which was necessary for hunting puffins. The Norwegian Lundehund’s toes give it an advantage in rough terrains.

9. Azawakh

These leggy hounds are native to West Africa and members of the sighthound family. They’ve chased gazelle across the Sahara for centuries, but have remained relatively unknown outside their homeland, and weren’t added to the AKC until 2011.

8. Thai Ridgeback

Until recently the existence of this mysterious breed was almost unknown outside of Thailand. They’re 1 of only 3 breeds to feature a ridge of hair that runs along their backs in the opposite direction of their coats.

7. Otterhound

This rare dog breed first appeared in medieval England but wasn’t officially recognized until the 19th century. They were originally wildly popular thanks to their superior hunting skills, but today these scarce shaggy-coated cuddle bugs make very affectionate family pets.

Otterhounds are known for their superb sense of smell, and despite their size, they are excellent swimmers. They were initially bred to hunt otters, hence their name. With their double coat that's water-resistant, they were able to withstand the cold waters while hunting.

6. Mudi

The Mudi, pronounced “Moodie” is a herding breed that has existed since the 19thcentury. While still rare this curly coated Hungarian breed is slowly becoming more popular, especially among agility lovers.

5. Lagotto Romagnolo

These adorable fluffy dogs come from the Romagna sub-region of Italy. Lovingly known as Italy’s “truffle dog” as they were originally used to hunt truffles.

4. Nederlandse Kooikerhondje

These cute pups come from the Netherlands and possess some serious duck hunting skills. They nearly went extinct shortly after World War II making them one of the rarest dog breeds in the world, but thanks to breed enthusiasts they’re making a comeback.

3. Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican Hairless Dog)

Also known as the Mexican Hairless Dog, this breed has been around for more than 3,000 years. This ancient Aztec dog of the gods was at the brink of extinction by the 1950s and still remains rare to this day, even in North America.

Despite their lack of hair, these dogs are known for their calm and alert nature. They have a long lifespan, often living up to 20 years. They have been featured in numerous artworks throughout history, signifying their cultural importance.

2. Stabyhoun

This beautiful breed from the Netherlands is both a south-mouthed retriever and a pointer. They make our list of rarest dog breeds in the world because they didn’t appear outside of their home country until the early 2000s.

10. Kai Ken

This rare breed is only one of six dog breeds native to Japan. They are so rare in fact, that in Japan they’re a natural treasure and have been protected by law since 1934.

We hope you enjoyed this informative look at some of the rarest dog breeds in the world, and maybe even fell in love with one of these adorable breeds you possibly didn’t know even existed!

It's fascinating to know that these breeds, though rare, each hold a unique position in the canine world.
