Need to get away from everything for a few days? A relaxing holiday in Fuerteventura might be just what you are looking for. This island, the second largest in the archipelago, has a lot to offer.
Its dry, desert-like landscape will not leave you unimpressed, nor will its paradisiacal beaches. You will have the opportunity to sample its exquisite gastronomy, with typical dishes from the island.
The island is also an ideal destination for water sports, outdoor activities and getting in touch with nature. Do you want to live the experience? Read on, we have a lot to tell you.
Find peace and tranquillity in Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura is a true paradise for those looking for an escape to serenity and natural beauty. The island offers unique moments that will stay with you forever if you want to immerse yourself in an oasis of peace and tranquillity.
There is a wide range of options available to you. Would you like to discover the true essence of the Canary Islands while finding yourself?
Quiet and secluded beaches
For many, Fuerteventura has the most spectacular beaches in the archipelago. The list of places where you can relax in the sun, away from the hustle and bustle of the city and everyday life, is long.
Getting away from it all and reconnecting with nature is what these extensive golden, soft sandy beaches, bathed in turquoise, crystal clear waters, invite you to do. Contemplate the immensity of the ocean, read a good book, spend quality time with your partner or family.
The dunes of Corralejo, in the northeast of the island, Cofete beach, one of the most iconic and secluded, or Sotavento beach, near Costa Calma, should be on your list of the best beaches in Fuerteventura. Also Bajo de la Burra, known as the beach of the Palomitas because of the calcareous algae or rhodoliths that the tide brings to the shore.
Other beaches include Esquinzo, Barlovento, La Solapa, La Pared, Jarubio, Charcos Verdes, La Concha, Ajuy, Garcey, Esmeralda, El Cotillo, Tebeto and El Matorral. If you have time, we recommend that you visit as many as you can. Fuerteventura has 190 kilometres of coastline, so imagine what you can discover.
Relaxing outdoor activities
Fuerteventura offers many relaxing outdoor activities. Trails and routes, sailing trips, dolphin and whale watching, off-road excursions, guided tours, buggy safaris and bike rides.
Don’t miss the trail to Calderón Hondo, the best preserved volcano on the island, if you want to discover one of its most spectacular sights. From the highest point of its crater, at 278 metres, you can enjoy magnificent views of the sea in the background.
Another iconic sight are the windmills, which began to be built in the 19th century and are now an integral part of Fuerteventura’s landscape. There are more than 1,000 on the island and many can be visited.
Stargazing from the dunes of Corralejo is another very relaxing activity. If you have some experience and the right equipment, you can do this yourself. If not, you can contact one of the companies that organise the trips.
If you have a passion for motoring and adventure, we recommend a buggy safari through Caleta de Fuste. A place that will leave you open-mouthed with itsunique landscapes.
Water activities in Fuerteventura are one of the main pastimes on this island, the most popular being surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing, paddle surfing, snorkelling and scuba diving.
For nature lovers, nothing beats tours to places like Mount Tindaya, Timanfaya National Park, La Geria or Lago Verde in El Golfo. And if photography is your thing, climb to the Morro Velosa viewpoint for some of the best photography.
Natural pools in Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura is a great place for natural therapies for your body and mind. We recommend a visit to Aguas Verdes, a natural volcanic pool where you can enjoy a very relaxing bath. We also invite you to discover Caleta de Fuste, Puertito de los Molinos, Las Lagunitas on the island of Los Lobos, the lagoon of Tierra Dorada beach, the lagoons of Sotavento and El Cotillo, Corralejo Viejo and the natural pool of Ajuy. These natural pools are sheltered from sea currents, making them very safe and perfect for relaxing.
Digital disconnection in Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura is the ideal place to practise digital disconnection. Enjoy your privacy and reconcile your professional, family and private life in a privileged setting.
On its paradisiacal beaches, you can switch off your mobile phone and immerse yourself in a world of sensations that will allow you to reconnect with your own essence.
Healthy gastronomy
The essence of Fuerteventura’s typical gastronomy is linked to its first settlers, who created a menu of unmistakable and intense flavours that have left their mark.
The cuisine of Fuerteventura is characterised by its simple preparation, using natural products from the land, such as fish, gofio, cheese and goat meat. This is one of the reasons why it is such a healthy cuisine.
Don’t leave the island without trying a good casserole of mussels, limpets and snails as a starter, and the famous wrinkled potatoes with green or red mojo sauce. Main courses include exquisite sancochos, stews and a wide variety of delicious fish caught by local fishermen. Finish off with the traditional frangollo or a selection of its famous cheeses.
