Invasive micropapillary carcinoma of the breast overexpresses MUC4 and is associated with poor outcome to adjuvant trastuzumab in HER2-positive breast cancer

Invasive micropapillary carcinoma of the breast (IMPC) is a histological tumor variant that occurs with low frequency characterized by an inside-out formation of tumor clusters with a pseudopapillary arrangement. IMPC is an aggressive tumor with poor clinical outcome. In addition, this histological subtype usually expresses human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) which also correlates with a more aggressive tumor. In this work we studied the clinical significance of IMPC in HER2-positive breast cancer patients treated with adjuvant trastuzumab. We also analyzed mucin 4 (MUC4) expression as a novel biomarker to identify IMPC. We retrospectively studied 86 HER2-positive breast cancer patients treated with trastuzumab and chemotherapy in the adjuvant setting. We explored the association of the IMPC component with clinicopathological parameters at diagnosis and its prognostic value. We compared MUC4 expression in IMPC with respect to other histological breast cancer subtypes by ...
Resettlement of Northern Muslim IDPs in Sri Lanka
Mohamed Shareef Asees
The purpose of this article is to explore the resettlement of Northern Muslim IDPs and find outthe hindrance which delays the process of Marichukati village in Mannar district. It has been 25years since the Muslims were forcibly evicted from their home land by the LTTE and have beenliving in the Puttalam district in many IDP camps in vulnerable conditions. The end of conflict inMay 2009, brought a new hope for the resettlement of Muslim IDPs. However both the SriLankan government and the international community prioritized the Tamil IDPs for resettlementand sidelined the Muslim IDPs from it. This has led some Muslim IDPs to go back to their placesof origin voluntarily. The former Resettlement Minister, Rishad Badiudeen was able to negotiatewith some Islamic organizations and they agreed to provide some houses for this marginalizedMuslim IDPs. In 2012, Muslims in Marichukatti began their resettlement process with thesupport of Qatar foundation. Since then some Buddhist hardliners and media groups began toaccuse their resettlement and claimed it was an illegal resettlement and violation of wilpattunational forest, though the Muslims hold their deeds (legal documents) to prove the ownershipand to live in their own place. This research will employ the pluralism theory and utilize both primary and secondary data in order to explore the resettlement of Muslim IDPs. One of the keyfindings of this research is that although there is a claim about violation of Wilpattu, Muslims inMarichukati are legally entitled to live in their own habitants. Key words: Resettlement, Northern Muslim IDPs and Marichukati

Decay Dynamics of Tumors

The fractional cell kill is a mathematical expression describing the rate at which a certain population of cells is reduced to a fraction of itself. We investigate the mathematical function that governs the rate at which a solid tumor is lysed by a cell population of cytotoxic lymphocytes. We do it in the context of enzyme kinetics, using geometrical and analytical arguments. We derive the equations governing the decay of a tumor in the limit in which it is plainly surrounded by immune cells. A cellular automaton is used to test such decay, confirming its validity. Finally, we introduce a modification in the fractional cell kill so that the expected dynamics is attained in the mentioned limit. We also discuss the potential of this new function for non-solid and solid tumors which are infiltrated with lymphocytes.
